"Original Friends of Dorothy"
Over the Rainbow Social Club was founded to address an urgent and often overlooked part of our LGBTQ+ community; the mature and older generations. "Friends of Dorothy" is a phrase with deep roots in the LGBTQ+ history, once used as a subtle way for people to recognize each other in harsh and less accepting times. Widely linked to the Wizard of Oz and it's iconic star Judy Garland the term became a quiet symbol of shared identity in the community for connection and safety.
Today OTR has coined the phrase "Original friends of Dorothy" in honor of those who forged the path through adversity and societal lack of acceptance. it represents more than a coded phrase, it reflects the spirit of belonging, resilience and chosen family.
